Free T3
- Useful for:
Measurement of free triiodothyronine (FT3) in serum helps assess thyroid function. FT3 is often more elevated than FT4 in Graves disease, and in about 5% of hyperthyroid patients, FT3 may be elevated alone (T3-toxicosis). In contrast, FT4 levels are usually higher than FT3 in toxic multinodular goiter and in cases of excessive T4 therapy. Therefore, serum FT3 helps distinguish between different types of hyperthyroidism.
